RED BULL’S AUGMENTED RACING
Red Bull came up with a clever way to sell their beverages in bulk. Red Bull Augmented racing is a mobile app for smartphones that requires the consumer to purchase a dozen Red Bulls. Check out the video below.
Importance to Mountain Dew and AMP
AMP and Mountain Dew should consider using augmented reality to promote their products, but instead of a racing theme game, action sports could be incorporated.
ETNIES BUYS A SHOE PLANT TREE
Etnies is making some true efforts to restore our planet’s rainforests by creating their own! “Buy a shoe plant a tree” is the name of the project and you could probably guess how they’re funding the planting of the 35,000+ trees. For every pair of Jameson 2 Eco shoes sold, Etnies will plant one tree that will culminate into The Etnies Rainforest. With the help of Costa Rican native tribes and a reforestation organization, Etnies will absorb enough C02 to fill almost half a billion boxes of shoes. This is just one facet of Etnies plan to become carbon neutral by 2020!
Importance to Mountain Dew and AMP
Mountain Dew and AMP can encourage potential consumers to purchase beverages by launching a product where they donate a portion of the proceeds towards the restoration of the environment. The project’s name and purpose could tie into Mountain Dew or AMP’s name (e.g. finding a way help to preserve our mountains).
CHANGES FOR STREET LEAGUE
Street league announced they will be changing the contest format for the 2011 season. Instead of having six riders competing in the finals, there will be ten. Riders will compete in three sections with the elimination of the two lowest scoring riders after each section creating a down to the last trick situation for all three rounds.
Dyrdek is also adding variety to each stage in the contest. Instead of having one obstacle in four separate stages, there will be three features to skate in three stages (nine total obstacles, instead of last year’s four). Be sure to tune in to Street League on ESPN this spring and summer.

Importance to Mountain Dew
Dew Tour contest formats should continue to be altered from time-to-time to give the viewers and athletes a new and different perspective that keeps them coming back for new and exciting experiences.
GRENADE GAMES-SEVEN
The infamous Grenade Games 7 was held the last weekend of March this year at Bear Mountain. A slew of unconventional contests took place (e.g., a mini pipe jam and Chinese downhill where snowboarders awkwardly and recklessly charged down moguls). Although the event has its fair share of goofing around, there was no shortage of technical and stylish riding with a massive channel gap session and some seriously big rail features. Rap / hip hop artists Del The Funky Homosapien of the Guerrilas and two time Grammy winner “The Game” performed each night drawing in large crowds. Check some coverage here to catch a glimpse of the event.
Importance to Mountain Dew and AMP
Sponsoring these type of events that attract the core action sports consumer is a way in which Mountain Dew and AMP can gain the opportunity to cater to athletes and fans in a new and creative way. These types of events always gain media attention from endemic and social media outlets, and would be a great opportunity for some of the Mountain Dew and AMP athletes to be showcased.
TWENTY FIRST CENTURY HIPPIES
MTV Sticky takes a look into what they call “hippies of the 21st century.” At a glance, you probably wouldn’t identify this group of well-dressed kids as hippies, but believe it, because they are voting with one of the most powerful tools known-the dollar. This environmental and socially conscious consumer is being heard, as companies release products that customers (specifically youth) can feel good about purchasing. A slew of leather alternatives (vegan) from well known brands such as Doc Marten Shoes and Apple Computers are being marketed to consumers as the number of vegetarians and vegans continue to grow.
But companies are catering to more than just animal enthusiasts. Stores like Shared Earth are popping up where all items offered from housewares to jewelry are certified Fair Trade. Fair trade certified retailers help provide jobs, financial stability and sustainable growth in developing societies around the world.
Popular musical artists like Radio Head and Wilco are helping to promote sustainability by selling t shirts made from plastic bottles and reusable aluminum water bottles. Bono started a sustainable clothing line with his wife Ali to help relieve poverty in developing countries.
Importance to Mountain Dew
Mountain Dew’s PET program is a great example of a company that is recognizing the need to develop programs that reach the “21st Century Hippy” demographic, as they are only growing in size. A contest could be created where participants offer up ideas on how to recycle Mountain Dew or AMP cans and bottles into new products.
